A warm welcome

The first Abbeyfield Society was founded in 1956 by Richard Carr-Gomm in Bermondsey in London. The first meeting regarding the formation of a Society was held in Abbeyfield Road, hence the name of the organisation. The movement grew through the establishment of many separate independent societies, some of whom have several houses.

The Abbeyfield movement has spread beyond the UK. A separate organisation know as “Abbeyfield International” encourages and supports the establishment of Abbeyfield Societies in other countries. The average age of residents in Abbeyfield is 85 years, and approximately 9,000 people are currently living in Abbeyfield houses. Abbeyfield is a volunteer lead movement.

We encourage residents to bring their own reminders of home, such as pieces of furniture, pictures, ornaments and other special momentos to help personalise their bedrooms. Within walking distance can be found a public house, village store, post office and various places of worship, all of which contribute to a lively village community.
